Visual Arts Summer Instructor I​/II Jobs in Sherwood Park, Canada at Strathcona County

This posting is for up to four positions including both Visual Arts Instructor I and Visual Arts Instructor II.

We are seeking:

  • 1 Visual Arts Instructor I at Gallery@501
  • 2 Visual Arts Instructor I’s at Smeltzer House Visual Arts Centre
  • 1 Visual Arts Instructor II at Smeltzer House Visual Arts Centre

These are seasonal positions starting mid-June with an expected end date of August 28, 2026.

These positions report to the Visual Arts Programmers at Smeltzer House Visual Arts Centre and Gallery programs you will lead or support include:

  • Summer camps (Monday – Friday) from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Other programs that you may occasionally support include:

  • Programming occurring on weekday mornings and afternoons at various Strathcona County recreation facilities.
  • Culture programming occurring on evenings and weekends (Example: birthday parties and registered course coverage).

Key Responsibilities

  • Instructor I ($20.55 – $25.72)
  • Provide children and youth with an inclusive, positive, safe, and creative learning experience.
  • Provide safe supervision to participants engaged in visual art programs.
  • Plan, organize, schedule, and present art projects, games, outdoor play, and other activities.
  • Create and support the making of project samples/demos.
  • Provide support to the operation of summer programs such as safe drop-off/pick-up procedures, daily attendance records, communication with parents, and accurate recording and monitoring of program participant information.
  • Daily set up, prep and clean-up of activity site(s).
  • Ensure health and safety regulations are followed.
  • Provide daily feedback and communicate any incidents that occurred in the program to supervisor.
  • Assist with program documentation, administration and site preparation.
  • Positively interact with the summer camp team and collaborate with fellow instructors.
  • Provide excellent guest service to program participants, parents/caregivers and site visitors.
  • Instructor II (Lead Instructor) in addition to Instructor I responsibilities ($27.01 – $33.78)
  • Plan, develop and deliver age-appropriate activities that incorporate a variety of artforms and mediums. This may include but is not limited to: drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, fibre art, art history and contemporary art theory.
  • Develop programs that focus on skill development and progression, using an arts education approach to enhance participant learning, appreciation, and engagement.
  • Lesson plans should consider the diverse interests of children and youth, supporting their emotional, artistic, and social development. They should also foster creativity and promote the progression of fundamental movement and fine motor skills.
  • Prepare supplies and materials for each program.
  • Prepare and refine project samples for use as teaching tools during class instruction.
  • Ensure program spaces are clean, safe and that materials and equipment are used in accordance with Strathcona County Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines.
  • Manage forms, documents and communication with parents/caregivers at drop-off/pick-up.
  • Communicate any questions, issues or concerns to the Visual Arts Recreation Programmers.
  • Evaluate and provide mentorship to Leaders in Training (LIT) summer participants aged 12Y-17Y.

  • High Five – Principles of Healthy Child Development considered an asset
  • Strathcona County’s Leaders in Training program considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience or skills in some or all of the following:
    • Art fundamentals: painting, drawing, art and design
    • Contemporary art knowledge and interpretation skills in a gallery or museum environment
    • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, art, and history
    • Experience providing curriculum-connected arts programming
    • Ceramic arts: pottery techniques, hand-building and surface decoration
