Technical Operations Responsibilities

The person in this position is responsible for the technical operations of all performance and teaching spaces in the FPA building, including the Leslie Philips (LP) Theater, a performance space with a capacity of 350 seats; the Acting Lab (FPA 111); the costume, scene, and paint shops; and the theater dressing rooms. They are also responsible for operation of performance/teaching spaces in the Campus Center (CC), including the Black Box theater and the performance space in the CC cafeteria.

The person in this position works with college faculty, staff and administrators as well as outside organizations to ensure that events scheduled in these spaces run smoothly, from a technical standpoint. Duties include but are not limited to operating and maintaining a computerized light and sound system and a variety of audio‑visual equipment and power tools; supervising lighting and the construction of stage scenery for theatrical productions;

and providing audio support and recording for music concerts.

Under the direction of the Dean of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Maintain the LP Theater auditorium and all equipment associated with productions therein, including the control booth, scene and costume shops, dressing rooms, and Acting Lab.
  • Maintain the LP Theater lighting and sound systems, as well as power tools and equipment in the scene shop and lighting equipment in the music recital hall (FPA 137).
  • Supervise the construction of sets and lighting for all theater productions, in coordination with theater directors and designers.
  • Supervise sound and lighting for Music Department concerts and events, including mid‑semester and end‑of‑semester student concerts, the annual Jazz Festival, and Holyoke Civic Symphony concerts.
  • Assist with media needs for all‑college meetings held in the LP Theater.
  • Train and supervise a crew of approximately three work study students each semester; serve as the Division Dean’s designee for supervision.
  • Train and work effectively with the part‑time Technical Theater Assistant; serve as the Division Dean’s designee for supervision.
  • Be aware of protocols for safe operation of equipment, and operate all equipment within prescribed safety parameters.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of equipment, tools, and production supplies.
  • Work with the Division clerk and administrative assistant, CMTA Department Chair, and Division Dean to order supplies for all theater productions.
  • Work with the Division clerk, administrative assistant and CMTA Department Chair to inventory and maintain all essential theater‑related supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinate with Division administrative assistants and Associate Dean to repair or replace equipment in the LP Theater or shops.
  • Support faculty teaching Stagecraft courses as needed.
  • Coordinate with the President’s office to support campus‑wide meetings and events in the LP theater.
  • Coordinate with FPA administrative assistant for scheduling of college events, as well as events booked by outside groups.
  • Provide technical support to outside groups renting the L.P. Theater.
