Overview
With the support of funding from Canada’s New Horizon’s for Seniors Program, the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra is responding to a community need voiced by long‑term care facilities. The benefits of live music to promote social interaction, lift spirits and spark memories is supported by medical research. We are looking for SPO Musicians interested in joining us for this pilot project.
Program Details
This program will feature SPO musicians and a few others (e.g. a singer, pianist, or guitarist). It is a paying gig
. Running from late August 2025 through March 2026, there are two components for the program.
- Each selected ensemble unit will present a one‑hour chamber music event to an audience of seniors, which will be presented three times in three different Scarborough seniors’ residences. Approximately seven ensemble units will be selected for this program.
- One musician will visit an individual senior who has serious health issues and would appreciate some attention through music and conversation.
Responsibilities
- Perform chamber music concerts as a small ensemble (2 to 4 musicians) or as an individual performer for single concerts.
- Rehearse once and perform three concerts for the ensemble; each individual musician for three concerts.
- Play a program featuring accessible classical music and arrangements of popular music, including movie tunes, Broadway songs, pop songs, etc. Budget is available for non‑classical sheet music.
- Interact with seniors during the performance, providing information about the music, encouraging participation, and sharing stories.
- At the end of each event, record feedback from seniors via a short 5–7 minute session using a provided form.
- Schedule concerts primarily on weekdays, morning or afternoon; occasional evening or Saturday concert is possible. Two concerts in one day may be booked.
- Participate in a one‑hour paid mandatory online training session to understand expectations of senior homes.
Individual Visit Responsibilities
- Coordinate with Ted Runcie for the specifics of each individual senior visit.
- Engage in music and conversation with seniors whose health conditions warrant additional attention.
Qualifications
- Proficient musician with experience in chamber music performance.
- Ability to play accessible and popular music arrangements.
- Comfortable interacting with seniors and engaging them in musical activities.
- Availability for performance dates from late August 2025 through March 2026.
