School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), Division of Dance invites applications for sessional instructors to teach the following courses in the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027. Lectures for the Fall 2026 term run from September 1 to December 4, 2026, and lectures for the Winter 2027 term run from January 11 to April 13, 2027. Course dates are provided below.

Fall

2026

  • DNCE 211:
    Introductory Jazz Dance

    Course dates:
    September 1 – December 4, 2026
    Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:00-9:50

    Description:

    Introductory study of the techniques of jazz dance.

  • DNCE 311/313/411/413:
    Elementary Jazz Dance / Intermediate Jazz Dance

    Course dates:
    September 1 – December 4, 2026
    Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00-11:50

    Description:

    Elementary and intermediate study of jazz dance techniques.

  • DNCE 375:
    Complimentary Dance Training Practices

    Course dates:
    August 24-28, 2026 (Block week)
    Monday – Friday 8:30-12:30/13:00-17:00

    Description:

    Study of complementary training practices for improving dance performance.

Winter 2027

  • DNCE 206.2/343.11:
    Latin Dance

    Course dates:
    January 11 – April 13, 2027
    Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00-11:50

    Description:

    An introduction to Latin dance.

  • DNCE 215:
    Hip Hop I

    Course dates:
    January 11 – April 13, 2027
    Mon & Wed 8:00-9:50

    Description:

    Introductory study of the techniques of hip hop.

  • DNCE 233:
    Creative Process I:
    Improv & Composition

    Course dates:
    January 11 – April 13, 2027
    Mon & Wed 8:00-9:50

    Description:

    Practical study of movement improvisation as a critical component of creative process.

  • DNCE 321/323/421/423:
    Elementary Ballet / Intermediate Ballet

    Course dates:
    January 11 – April 13, 2027
    Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00-11:50

    Description:

    Elementary and intermediate study of ballet techniques.

  • DNCE 347:
    Dance Histories

    Course dates:
    January 11 – April 13, 2027
    Mon & Wed 16:00-17:15

    Description:

    In depth study of dance theatre practices focusing on twentieth century to present.

  • DNCE 491:
    Digital Creation and Production

    Course dates:
    January 11 – April 13, 2027
    Mon & Wed 14:00-15:15

    Description:

    Intermediate study of dance creation, production and performance using digital technologies.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Preferred qualification: possession of MFA or PhD in Dance or Interdisciplinary MFA or PhD with a dance focus.

    Minimum qualification:

    MA, BA or BFA degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis.

  • Professional experience recognized by peers in the field.
  • Outstanding professional achievement or substantial training in the field specified in the job announcement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities.
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful teaching experience at the university level.

  • Energy, enthusiasm and commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • The willingness to work with students having a wide range of skills, varying abilities, motivations, and academic or vocational goals.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in a team environment.
  • The ability to use instructional strategies designed for diverse learning styles and academic goals.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of current literature on dance.
