About the Role

As an experienced reporter, you will cover local news and current events in the Medicine Hat area and produce stories for CBC News digital, radio, social, streaming, and TV platforms. You’ll work independently under the direction of the Calgary assignment desk, and collaborate closely with regional producers and teammates.

Your Responsibilities

  • Pitch, research, write, and produce original story ideas for radio, digital, and visual audiences.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news as events unfold.
  • Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.
  • Create video treatments for original stories.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a wide range of sources and contacts to deepen community connections and amplify under‑represented voices.

Qualifications

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent.
  • Ability to find stories in complex civic and budget documents and explain them to a broad audience.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and meet competing demands in a short span of time.
  • Strong collaboration skills within a creative team.
  • Ability to plan projects and recommend news treatments for multiple platforms.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, overtime, and weekends.
