Position: Public Information Director I

This employee serves as the Assistant Director of Public Information within SCDNR’s Office of Education, Outreach, and Information (EOI), supporting the Director of Public Information in the coordination and execution of agency communications initiatives. Responsibilities include assisting with crisis and incident communications, serving as a public information representative in the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) Emergency Operations Center during natural disasters and emergency events, preparing public remarks and approved messaging, coordinating press and media interview requests, and supporting communications efforts for SCDNR personnel who interact directly with the public.

Job Duties Include

  • Assists the Director of Public Information with crisis and incident communications; prepares evergreen and partnership news releases and media advisories; and represents SCDNR in the State Emergency Operations Center during disaster activations and emergency events.
  • Creates written content for publications, news releases, media advisories, websites, and engaging social media platforms. Collaborates with SCDNR employees to communicate complex concepts in clear, accessible language.
  • Reviews written materials for accuracy, clarity, grammar, and consistency, and provides editorial recommendations to strengthen communications products. Provides editorial oversight for internal communications channels and ensures compliance with SCDNR brand and editorial style guidelines.
  • Supervises staff responsible for social media and other communications functions to ensure effective content creation, platform management, audience engagement, and overall communications performance.
  • Assists with the development of key messaging and content for education, outreach, and marketing campaigns. Ensures communications products are developed using current best practices in education, outreach, marketing, and public information.
  • Supports the Office of Education, Outreach, and Information (EOI) through effective use and management of agency digital asset platforms for photographs, video, graphics, and related communications materials.
  • Produces monthly, annual, and special reports as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor, including responsibilities related to maintaining agency property, equipment, and operational readiness.

A bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of related experience.

The Assistant Director of Public Information (ADPI) works under the supervision of the Director of Public Information and supports agency communications through the development of high-quality written and multimedia content for print, web, and social media platforms. Preferred candidates should possess strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, including experience developing news releases, newsletters, website content, social media content, blogs, feature articles, and targeted marketing campaigns.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to collaborate with SCDNR staff to translate technical or complex subject matter into clear, engaging content tailored to diverse audiences, while also independently identifying and developing communications opportunities aligned with agency goals and priorities. Writing assignments may be technical, instructional, informational, or creative in nature and should reflect established SCDNR tone, branding, and editorial standards.

Preferred qualifications include experience using social media platforms, analytics tools, and digital communications strategies to promote messaging, events, and public engagement. Experience with graphic design and the development of informational or educational displays and publications is preferred.

Knowledge of natural resource stewardship, conservation, outdoor recreation, or related subject matter is highly desirable. Candidates should also demonstrate proficiency with computers, cameras, audiovisual equipment, photography, design, and visual storytelling. A bachelor’s degree in communications, public administration, environmental and sustainability studies, English, creative writing, or similar field and three (3) years of related experience preferred.
