Producer, investigative (English Services) ( On-Site)
CBC B.C. is looking for an experienced producer to drive our investigative and enterprise news coverage.
In this role, you will be an editorial leader and an experienced mentor, someone who demonstrates exceptional editorial judgment and superior critical thinking skills, and who thrives as part of a team in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of a multi-platform newsroom.
You will provide hands-on editorial direction to journalists in our investigative team and beyond to ensure CBC B.C. is setting the agenda in the city and the province through original enterprise and investigative journalism.
You will have experience creating and leading investigative work and a keen knowledge of legal risk management. You are at ease digging for information behind the headlines, whether that’s through dogged research and a network of contacts, or open data, documents and Freedom of Information requests.
You possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, are a strong planner and organizer, and are at ease with juggling multiple tasks and priorities. You appreciate the range of perspectives that people hold and believe in the importance of giving voice to those perspectives.
In this role, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. There will be a regular and ongoing requirement to coordinate the work of others, and there is a wide latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity.
Your responsibilities:
Under the direction of the executive producer of news, work with journalists to produce investigative and enterprise content for all platforms that is relevant, impactful and original.
Oversee all aspects of story development including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and/or editing.
Pitch, research and write original stories, and as warranted, present stories on-air, providing analysis and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.
Work closely with other producers to make decisions about story priorities and rollouts.
Ensure Journalistic Standards and Practices are met and legal issues identified.
Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts.
Provide feedback and coaching to journalists to help them develop their skills, with the goal to build investigative talent on all teams.
Assist with planning coverage for special projects and events.
Liaise with leaders of investigative teams elsewhere at CBC/SRC
Your profile:
Demonstrated experience working on enterprise and investigative content in a fast-paced daily multi-platform news environment.
Strong journalistic skills, with excellent news judgment and the ability to work effectively under deadlines.
Keen attention to detail and superior organizational skills.
Excellent critical thinking skills, including a deep knowledge of and familiarity with CBC Journalistic Standards as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
Knowledge of and experience in assigning and creating content for all platforms (digital, social, radio and TV) as well as vetting, editing, fact-checking and packaging.
