Position overview Position title: Design and Technology Pre-six Lecturer

Salary range: A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $8,872-$10,912 (based on salary points 1-8). Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year.

Percent time: Variable, based on the course load assigned.

Anticipated start: Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit’s instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made in fall quarter 2025 through fall quarter 2026. Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment.

Position duration: Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position description

The Performance, Play & Design Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications to the Theater Arts Program for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach courses in the following areas:

  • Costumes:
    Introduction to costume, costume construction, masks and make-up, history of clothing and costume, advanced costume design, Computer Aided Drafting (or Drawing) and Design (CADD).
  • Lighting:
    Introduction to lighting design, advanced lighting design, CADD.
  • Sound:
    Sound in the theater.
  • Design:
    Introduction to production design, drafting for theatrical production, design for Asian theater, the history of design for theater, advanced production design, scene painting, CADD.
  • Digital media:
    Applications of digital technology.
  • Production:
    Production management, fundamentals of theater production

These courses are designed to meet campus general education requirements with the use of standard texts. Readers or teaching assistants may be assigned to assist instructors and will be supervised by the instructor.

Special attention will be given to persons with proven undergraduate teaching skills. The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching and other assigned duties.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)

MA or MFA (or equivalent foreign degree) in theater, performance or dance; or four years of equivalent professional experience with a record of performances and exhibitions in theater venues or alternative venues engaging the general public, and evidence of scholarship in peer-reviewed journals, web and/or book publications.
