Job Title: Design Manager, R&D Department

Job Summary

The Design Manager in the R&D department leads the design team responsible for developing new products, improving existing designs, and supporting innovation projects from concept to launch. This role combines creative direction, technical understanding, project leadership, and cross-functional collaboration.

The Design Manager ensures that all design work meets business goals, user needs, technical requirements, quality standards, and project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the design team within the R&D department.
  • Develop product concepts, design strategies, and innovation solutions.
  • Oversee the full design process, from research and ideation to prototyping, testing, and final design approval.
  • Work closely with engineering, product, manufacturing, quality, marketing, and business teams.
  • Translate customer needs, market trends, and technical requirements into practical design solutions.
  • Review and approve design drawings, prototypes, models, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure designs meet safety, performance, cost, usability, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Support research activities, feasibility studies, and product improvement projects.
  • Manage design timelines, resources, priorities, and project deliverables.
  • Identify design risks and propose solutions before product launch.
  • Mentor designers and support their technical and professional development.
  • Maintain design standards, documentation, and best practices.
  • Stay updated on new materials, technologies, tools, and industry trends.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in product design, R&D, or product development.
  • Experience leading or managing a design team.
  • Strong understanding of design thinking, prototyping, testing, and product development processes.
  • Knowledge of CAD software, 3D modeling tools, and design documentation.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and cost control.
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Design, Engineering, Innovation Management, or a related field.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, technology, consumer products, automotive, electronics, or industrial environment.
  • Experience with design validation, user testing, and product lifecycle management.
  • Knowledge of sustainability, ergonomics, and regulatory standards.
