Investigations Correspondent Jobs in Greater London, UK at The Guardian
Location: Greater London
Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism, and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.
We’re looking for an investigations correspondent to unearth important, agenda-setting stories that hold power to account.
You will be expected to show real commitment in pursuit of stories, which could span a diverse range of subjects in the UK or internationally. While your main focus will be medium and long-term projects, you will sometimes work on faster time frames.
This is a 12-month fixed-term contract or staff secondment.
We are seeking candidates with a proven record in investigative journalism, but we recognise that can involve a very broad array of interests, skills and experience. There is no single mould for an investigative reporter – we are always seeking to build a diverse ensemble of journalists with different backgrounds and experiences. You may have particular expertise – for example in AI, politics, kleptocracy, disinformation, sport, sexual abuse, migration or financial crime – or you could be a generalist who relishes deep dives into unknown waters.
We are searching for a candidate who has a thorough and meticulous grasp of detail.
About the role
- Produce high quality investigative journalism across multiple platforms
- Break stories that have national and international impact
- Collaborate with colleagues in the investigative team and wider newsroom
- Attend daily meetings, contributing to group discussions and helping the team identify journalistic priorities
- Work closely with Guardian editors and lawyers to find ways to get legally risky stories over the line
- Adhere to appropriate standards of data retention and security, and use encrypted channels for communication when required
- Work closely with the head of investigations and deputy head of investigations to identify personal priorities and develop investigations
- Tell stories through a range of other mediums, such as long reads, magazine features, audio podcasts, data visuals and films
About you
- Demonstrable experience in investigative journalism
- Proven experience of written journalism, whether news or features
- Preferable experience in visual / audio journalism
- Able to exercise strong editorial judgment in complex, legally sensitive situations, balancing speed, accuracy and risk.
- Demonstrate a rigorous commitment to ethical journalism, source protection, and legal compliance in high-risk reporting environments.
- Experience of a range of advanced investigative techniques
- Awareness of the demands of digital platforms and print
- Strong understanding of important issues with global impact
- Understanding of how to use various social media
- Excellent contacts and a proven ability to develop new sources
- Ideally, you’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
We actively encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.
