High School Sports Reporter, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is looking for a hard-charging reporter to cover high school sports in our region. We want a reporter who is adept at news stories on tight deadlines but is also able to spot the big picture, trends and feature opportunities. The beat includes a wide coverage area, with the potential to tap into schools and games across our region of 2.8 million people.
And while game coverage is certainly part of the job, we re looking for someone who can go beyond a routine game story. We want a reporter who can identify rising players and coaches and develop sources in the community. You ll collaborate on all-star lists, innovative preview and post-season coverage, and off-season enterprise stories. We want you to find interesting people and storylines that make up the fabric of our community.
This is a chance to help shape a beat and chase stories that will engage large groups of readers. You ll also work across all of our digital platforms. The ability to navigate social media, embrace new technology and experiment with new story forms is a must.
Responsibilities
- Cover high school sports across a regional beat, including identifying trends and developing enterprise stories beyond routine game coverage.
- Identify rising players and coaches; develop sources in the community; collaborate on all-star lists, preview coverage, post-season coverage, and off-season enterprise stories.
- Produce stories for multiple platforms, with emphasis on engaging readers on digital platforms and social media.
Qualifications
- Ability to work on tight deadlines and produce clear, accurate news stories and features.
- Strong reporting instincts to spot big-picture trends and opportunities for enterprise reporting.
- Experience collaborating with teams on special projects and long-form coverage.
- Proficiency in navigating social media and adopting new technologies and storytelling formats.
