Job Title: Fragrance Development Lead — Contraband
About the role
Contraband is looking for a Fragrance Development Lead to be the technical and olfactive backbone of our NPD process. This role owns the relationship between Contraband and the perfumers and fragrance houses we work with — translating brand and consumer briefs into precise olfactive direction, evaluating submissions with a trained nose, and guiding fragrances through development until they're ready to launch.
This is not a role for someone looking to manage a fragrance catalogue quietly. We're building a global fragrance house out of India — one that can stand next to legacy houses — and we want someone who feels that ambition personally, not just professionally.
What you'll do
- Translate creative and consumer briefs into clear, technical olfactive briefs that perfumers can execute against
- Manage day-to-day relationships with perfumers and fragrance houses — briefing, follow-up, and iteration through development rounds
- Evaluate fragrance submissions rigorously — assessing accuracy to brief, olfactive quality, performance and brand fit
- Run structured evaluation sessions, bringing in other stakeholders where useful, and documenting feedback clearly enough for perfumers to act on
- Flag technical or regulatory issues early — IFRA compliance, allergen concerns, stability problems — before they become late-stage blockers
- Track formulas, modification rounds, and version history so development decisions are never lost or duplicated
- Build the scent language and olfactive identity of Contraband over time
- Partner closely with the NPD and marketing team to understand whether submissions are meeting the original consumer/brand insight
Who you are
- A trained and discerning nose — you can identify notes, accords, and structure in a fragrance and articulate what's working and what isn't with precision
- Deep technical knowledge of fragrance composition, families, and how raw materials behave and age
- Genuinely ambitious about fragrance as a category — you want to build something globally significant, not just execute briefs
- Curious about how Indian sensibility, materials, and stories can hold their own on a global fragrance stage, not just imitate Western fine fragrance conventions
- Experienced giving perfumers feedback that's specific and actionable, not just impressionistic
- Familiar with IFRA standards and basic regulatory/compliance considerations in fragrance
- Highly organized — comfortable tracking multiple submissions, versions, and rounds without losing the thread
- A clear communicator — able to translate technical olfactive detail for non-technical stakeholders (marketing, leadership) and translate brand language back into technical direction for perfumers
