Position Summary

BCIT’s Digital Arts, Media and Design department within the School of Business + Media offers a range of programs in the areas of Animation and Gaming, Web and Mobile, and Communication and Graphics. We are currently seeking a temporary, part-time (0.2 FTE ) Instructor to teach full-time students in the Diploma in 3D Modeling, Art and Animation , from May to August 2026.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • MDAA 2642 3D Animation 2 (20%)
    • Students will continue to build on the core principles of animation learned in past courses. Students are introduced to interactive animations, FK IK blending/switching, and the techniques used to engage characters within their environments. Animation exercises covering movement mechanics, weight lifting, facial control, eye darts, blinks, expression changes, speech, and full-body acting allow the student to develop further acting skills while building a workflow for dealing with a variety of acting situations.

      Students will gain control over the camera and understand how to frame characters appropriately in given contexts, and add motion to the camera where necessary.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in 3D Animation, Game Art, Visual Effects, Computer Graphics, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional industry experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in character animation, gameplay animation, or performance animation within the film, animation, or game development industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in 3D character animation using Autodesk Maya, including keyframing, interpolation refinement, and graph editor workflows.
  • Strong understanding of advanced animation principles, including weight, timing, spacing, arcs, overlap, squash and stretch, and line of action.
  • Experience creating character performance animation, including acting shots, body mechanics, and interaction between characters and their environments.
  • Demonstrated experience animating complex movement mechanics, such as running, jumping, pushing/pulling, and other physically motivated actions.
  • Experience working with rigged characters using IK/FK systems and animation controls commonly used in production rigs.
  • Familiarity with facial animation techniques, including lip sync, eye darts, blinking, and expressive facial performance.
  • Strong understanding of animation blocking and shot layout, including camera placement, composition, and staging for animated performances.
  • Experience planning animation through reference gathering, pose selection, and performance analysis.
  • Ability to provide constructive critique and animation feedback to help students refine acting choices and animation polish.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support students from a range of skill levels.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous post-secondary teaching or mentoring experience.
  • Demonstrated industry success with appropriate and current experience and skills in the entire 3D pipeline including: 3D Modeling, Animating, Rigging, Texturing, Lighting, and Rendering.
  • Experience in Redshift, Arnold, and Unreal Engine.
