About the Media Lab
The IIHS Media Lab is a platform that engages with questions around the urban via multiple media practices. The Media Lab’s vision is to build a culture of research, teaching and pedagogy using the audio-visual medium inside and outside the classroom. In a rapidly changing complex world, the Media Lab has created a space where the use of images and sound can be a way of understanding the urban milieu and creating new forms of knowledge production. This is in keeping with the IIHS vision of being an interdisciplinary Institution where different disciplinary methods are used to address urban challenges.
Job Description
IIHS requires a curious, solutions-oriented media professional to join the dynamic Media Lab team at the intersection of media production, technology, and urban research. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about visual storytelling, thrives in a collaborative environment, and wants to use media as a tool to explore and communicate complex urban issues.
This will be a contractual position for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent.
Activities and Tasks
Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Creating compelling promotional videos, teasers, and trailers for institutional programmes, courses, MOOCs, events, and the Urban Lens Film Festival;
- Handling post-production workflows for various content;
- Assisting in producing content for the IIHS YouTube channel and Instagram handle for public dissemination;
- Handling communications and coordination tasks related to academic teams, specifically those supporting interactions with faculty and students;
- Providing logistical and technical support for events;
- Assisting with screening films during IIHS Screens and managing related logistics;
- Support podcast projects and other emerging media initiatives;
- Coordinating with internal teams and external partners on various media production projects;
- Maintaining awareness of media production workflows and helping to ensure smooth project execution;
- Assisting in the production of MOOCs and other educational content;
- Participating in workshops and training sessions, both as a learner and potential facilitator;
- Helping integrate visual media into teaching materials and pedagogical tools;
- Supporting the comprehensive documentation of the Kengeri Campus through filming and photography;
- Providing support to other IIHS functions and initiatives, including academics, research, training, practice, operations, and institutional projects, as required;
- Participating in institution-building activities at IIHS, carry out tasks assigned by the Institute, and undertake travel within or outside the country for IIHS-related work, as required.
Structure and Reporting
The external consultant will coordinate with the Lead – Media Lab at IIHS or any other person designated by the Lead and will be required to collaborate effectively with a diverse group of internal teams and external individuals/ organisations, and students.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate should have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts/ Media and Mass Communication/ Digital Media;
- 2-4 years of experience with motion graphics, title design, or other 2D animation applications in video content;
- Motion graphics proficiency: Strong working knowledge of motion graphics software and techniques, with a demonstrated ability to create engaging promotional videos, teasers, and trailers as per current trends. (Adobe After Effects or similar tool;
- Film-making and editing skills: Solid foundation in video production and post-production, with hands-on experience in editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve);
- Visual storytelling skills: Understanding of narrative structure, pacing, and visual communication principles;
- Technical competence: Familiarity with audio-visual equipments (DSLRs, video cameras, audio recorders, microphones), basic photography, and digital media workflows;
- Personal attributes:
- A curious and problem-solving attitude: A naturally inquisitive mind with the ability to find creative solutions to production challenges;
- Hands-on approach: Willingness to be a “one-man crew” when needed, handling multiple aspects of production independently;
- A collaborative spirit: Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams, faculty, students, and external partners;
- Reliability and professionalism: Consistent attendance, punctuality, and professional demeanor in all interactions;
- Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities;
- Cultural sensitivity: An open attitude and ability to work with diverse teams and communities;
- Desired attributes:
- Prior work on films, documentaries, or creative video projects would be an advantage;
- Exposure to educational content creation or working in academic/ research environments;
- Interest in urban studies, architecture, or social impact themes;
- Experience with 3D animation or emerging technologies (VR, AR, interactive media);
- Knowledge of Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems;
- Understanding of accessibility standards in media production;
- Interest in pedagogical applications of media.
This is a contractual engagement for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent. This offer is on an exclusive basis, which implies that other professional assignments (whether compensated or not) that bear a potential conflict of interest with IIHS cannot be undertaken.
The search will remain open until the position is filled.
Location
This position is based in Bangalore and may entail travel to other locations in India.
Review and Assessment
The role and performance of the incumbent shall be subject to normal review and assessment systems at IIHS.
