Your New Role…
CNN Weather is seeking a dynamic meteorologist and self-describing weather nerd to expand our forecasting and explanatory coverage across platforms. This role sits at the heart of our mission — translating complex atmospheric science into clear, compelling and trustworthy stories that audiences rely on every day.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer who thrives in the breaking news environment, can deliver level‑headed expertise in weather and earth science, and knows how to engage audiences on digital platforms.
You’ll deliver real‑time forecasts and nowcasts, help create on‑demand videos, and work with the team to produce daily forecasts and write sharp, accurate stories and features. You will also contribute to durable, evergreen and service‑oriented content that answers common audience questions about preparedness, safety and the mechanics of the atmosphere. Their work will help define the voice and authority of CNN Weather as a daily destination.
The successful candidate thrives in a fast‑paced news environment and understands how to communicate urgency during high‑impact weather events while maintaining clarity and calm authority. They are comfortable operating independently, making forecast calls and clearly explaining uncertainty when it exists.
This person will join one of CNN’s most innovative multi‑platform teams, working with other meteorologists, visual experts and reporters. The ideal candidate is fascinated by the natural world, thrives in a fast‑paced news environment and has their finger on the pulse of emerging trends.
Finally, this person must embody the CNN Climate & Weather team’s ethos — we are looking for a team‑oriented collaborator who values diversity, elevates their colleagues and enjoys working with other teams, including reporters, producers and product developers.
Your Role Accountabilities…
- Collaborate with the team as a meteorologist in the execution of live coverage during hurricanes, tornado outbreaks, severe ice storms, life‑threatening floods and more
- Report and write urgent, live‑updating digital coverage for CNN’s digital platforms in extreme weather situations
- Support live streams for CNN Weather on our mobile platform, working with video meteorologists to help our audience understand extreme weather
- Pitch and script videos — from quick hits on the weather of the day to deeper explainers
- Participate in live Q&A, incorporate audience questions into our coverage and adapt in the moment as conditions change
- Partner with video producers/editors and motion graphics to build compelling, data‑rich visuals that help audiences understand risk and impact
