PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

BBC World Service is establishing a new Nigeria Language Services Unit, with teams based in Lagos and Abuja, bringing together BBC Pidgin, BBC Yoruba and BBC Igbo under a single editorial leadership structure for the first time.

These services are among the most trusted international news providers for audiences across West Africa and a highly engaged global diaspora. With a strong editorial heritage, they are now entering a transformative phase — evolving into a digital-first, video-led operation designed to reach a new generation of audiences who consume news primarily via smartphones and social platforms.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

The Digital Content Producer/Reporter roles are central to this transformation. Successful candidates will help build and strengthen BBC Nigeria Language Services’ video journalism capability, contributing to filming, editing, scripting, presenting and end-to-end content production for digital audiences.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact

  • Generate original and distinctive video journalism by identifying under-reported stories, developing strong source networks and securing exclusive access, contributors and content.
  • Lead the development and production of visual stories, making independent editorial decisions on story direction, treatment, prioritisation and risk management, often under minimal supervision.
  • Shape stories through a visual-first approach, planning narratives, characters, sequences and shot selection from newsgathering through to production, ensuring clarity, engagement and strong storytelling.
  • Create content for multiple platforms by anticipating audience needs, capturing content in a range of formats and applying audience insight, platform trends and sharing behaviours to maximise impact and engagement.
  • Drive innovation in digital storytelling by testing new video formats, audience engagement techniques and production approaches, while staying ahead of competitor activity and emerging trends.
  • Maintain the highest editorial, creative and professional standards, ensuring all output reflects BBC values, demonstrates appropriate risk awareness and delivers quality regardless of speed, format or reporting environment.
  • Collaborate effectively with editors, designers and wider digital teams while sharing knowledge, improving workflows and helping to strengthen overall team capability and production standards.

Essential Criteria

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced filming and video editing skills, with the ability to self-shoot and edit compelling visual content to a high editorial and technical standard using industry-standard editing software.
  • Strong visual storytelling and story development skills, with the ability to originate, pitch, commission and produce engaging video content that captures attention quickly and sustains audience engagement.
  • Strong understanding of platform-specific video production, including vertical, square and horizontal formats, audience behaviour, SEO, algorithms and performance metrics to maximise reach and impact.
  • Proven ability to use audience data, platform insights and analytics to identify opportunities, shape editorial decisions and develop successful visual storytelling strategies.
  • Sound editorial judgement and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently, manage risk and make effective choices in fast-moving, sensitive or challenging reporting environments.
  • Strong knowledge of rights management, copyright, permissions and content compliance, combined with cultural awareness and a commitment to accurate, inclusive and responsible journalism.
  • Resilient, adaptable and innovative, with the ability to solve editorial, technical and logistical challenges, embrace new storytelling techniques and identify opportunities through emerging trends and competitor activity.

If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
