Women for Afghan Women is a grassroots organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights of Afghan women, girls, and families. With community centers in New York and Virginia, and a strong foundation of work across Afghanistan, WAW provides direct services, including case management, legal support, counseling, educational programs, and youth leadership initiatives, rooted in cultural competence and gender equality. Through advocacy, education, and empowerment, WAW works to ensure that Afghan women and girls can rebuild their lives with dignity and lead change in their communities. 

Position Summary

We are seeking a Storytelling & Content Development Coordinator (Contractor) to support ongoing storytelling and content creation across programs and communications channels. This role is responsible for gathering the stories, images, and narratives that inform emails, newsletters, social media, campaigns, and reports.

This position functions as the engine of storytelling by capturing real experiences from programs, events, staff, ambassadors, influencers, and community members. The coordinator will conduct interviews, capture photography and video, and translate those experiences into written narratives that reflect the organization’s voice and mission.

The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller who is comfortable working directly with people, documenting meaningful moments, and producing written content that communicates impact clearly and respectfully. This role focuses on storytelling production rather than campaign strategy.

The Storytelling & Content Development Coordinator (Contractor) will join the Development and Marketing/Communications team as a contract position with a minimum three-month commitment.

This position is fully remote. The selected candidate must be available to work approximately 3–4 hours per day, Monday through Thursday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Compensation: $1,800 monthly

Hours: 10-12 per week

Responsibilities: 

Story Gathering & Interview Coordination

  • Gather stories directly from programs, events, staff, ambassadors, influencers, and community members
  • Conduct interviews to document experiences, outcomes, and impact
  • Coordinate with WAW Ambassadors to identify and develop storytelling opportunities
  • Identify meaningful moments that illustrate program impact and community experiences
  • Maintain regular communication with Chief Growth Officer to to identify new story opportunities
  • Ensure stories are gathered consistently throughout the year to support campaigns and reporting needs

Photography & Video Documentation

  • Procure high-quality photographs that document programs, events, and community engagement
  • Record short-form video content that highlights impact and real-life experiences
  • Document authentic moments that can be used across digital and print communications
  • Edit and format images and video clips for sharing across platforms
  • Maintain organized files of visual content, labeled clearly for easy access

Written Story Development

  • Write first drafts of impact stories, testimonials, and feature narratives
  • Draft blog posts and written stories for publication on the website
  • Create story-based content that can be adapted for newsletters, social media, and campaigns
  • Translate interviews and experiences into clear, engaging written narratives
  • Maintain consistency with organizational voice, tone, and messaging standards
  • Revise and refine stories based on feedback from communications leadership

Content Organization & Library Management

  • Organize photos, videos, and written stories into a structured content library
  • Label and categorize content so it is searchable and accessible
  • Maintain an organized archive of storytelling materials
  • Ensure content is available when needed for campaigns, reports, and outreach
  • Support long-term content planning by maintaining consistent documentation

Email & Communications Support

  • Draft story-based content for email communications
  • Provide narrative content that can be adapted into newsletters and donor communications
  • Support communications needs by producing storytelling content on a regular schedule
  • Assist with content preparation for reports and campaigns as needed

Qualifications: 

As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of WAW and be driven by its mission. Beyond that, we are seeking a candidate who is both strategic and creative. They are comfortable managing day-to-day execution while thinking ahead about growth opportunities. They take initiative, bring forward ideas, and understand how digital platforms support storytelling, fundraising, and audience engagement. They are organized, responsive, and able to balance creativity with consistency.

Required Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in storytelling, communications, journalism, or content development
  • Demonstrated experience conducting interviews and gathering stories
  • Strong writing skills, particularly in narrative and feature-style writing
  • Experience with photography and basic photo editing
  • Experience capturing and editing short-form video content
  • Ability to translate interviews into clear, engaging written stories
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Comfort working independently and communicating with diverse stakeholders
  • Access to personal photography and recording equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations
  • Experience documenting community-based programs or impact stories
  • Familiarity with blog writing and website content publishing
  • Experience organizing digital media libraries
  • Basic video editing experience
  • Experience working with ambassadors, volunteers, or community representatives
  • Understanding of storytelling approaches that center dignity and respect
