About the Role:

The Role:

The Oil Price Reporter is responsible for every aspect of market reporting, including the collection and publication of primary market information, running an assessment process, assessing the value of a variety of oil markets, reporting market‑related news, writing commentary and analysis, contributing to methodology development and engaging with market sources.

Accountabilities:
Assess markets:

The price reporter in this position assesses the value of oil markets, accurately and fully in line with our rigorous and well‑known methodology. The price reporter surveys market participants throughout the day, publishes price updates, and runs an intensive one‑hour window at the end of the assessment day. They demonstrate a thorough understanding of Platts’ methodology, are rigorous when using mathematics and Excel spreadsheets, and can perform a full set of assessments without a spreadsheet.

They also ensure our methodology for market assessment is up to date.

Write high‑quality market commentaries:

The price reporter writes commentaries associated with his or her assessments. These commentaries help readers better understand what is happening in the market and how assessments were arrived at. The reporter files commentaries as news stories before midday when markets are volatile or unusually interesting, avoids repetitive and formulaic commentaries, closely monitors relevant inter‑product and inter‑region spreads, and ensures commentaries meet our editorial standards for writing and reporting.

The price reporter reports news and analysis relating to his or her market, helping readers such as traders, analysts, regulators, supply‑chain professionals, and others understand marketplace issues. Stories include supply and demand developments, government data, regulatory changes, trader movements, price trend analysis, and other relevant topics. The reporter provides a good blend of standard news and creative ‘enterprise’ reporting, files a reasonable quantity of stories relevant to their markets, and prioritises quality and originality over sheer quantity.

They file stories before lunchtime, work closely with the news desk, the Managing Editor, and others to identify and write good news, and are a vocal contributor to regular news meetings.

Engage with the industry:

The price reporter engages with market sources around the region, including those not regularly involved in the Market‑on‑Close assessment process. Engagement ensures close proximity to market developments, strong methodology development, creative story writing, and open communication channels. The reporter finds and nurtures new market sources, maintains good relationships with existing sources, ensures source lists are up to date, sends meeting summaries to manager and colleagues, avoids over‑reliance on instant messaging, talks to each source at least once a week, meets with different sources for lunch about once a week, and handles complaints in line with the Editorial Standard for complaints management.

    In the office by 9.30 am London time; publish assessments by 6.30 pm; publish commentaries by 7.00 pm.

    Ensure all methodology initiatives are managed through MTT.

    Follow house reporting style.
  • Meet Platts’ editorial standards:
    Correct less than 0.25 % of assessments published.
  • Meet Platts’ editorial standards:
    Handle enquiries and complaints effectively.

Essential

Skills:

  • Experience of relevant reporting or analytical experience.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with a wide range of role types and personalities, internally and externally.
  • Confidence with networking and developing business relationships.
  • A developed interest in commodity markets and crude oil.
  • Strong public speaking / presentational skills.
  • Good numeracy skills including confidence using Excel.
  • Excellent English speaking and writing skills.
  • Fluency in additional languages would be an advantage.
