What is the opportunity?
We’re looking for an Assistant Director of Design with a robust portfolio of single-family projects who excels in a fast-moving studio environment – someone ready to bring their passion for design and extensive real-world experience, to help drive superior design solutions. This role is a full-time position fully based in our new Irvine Design Studio, where the team works side by side every day. It is a hands-on, creative environment where collaboration happens quickly, priorities are set in real time, and mentoring comes naturally as people work together.
As an Assistant Director of Design, your primary responsibility will be to collaborate with other designers to help lead company initiatives for fresh and innovative design that enhances the Toll Brother’s brand. With the Director of Design’s assistance, you will provide input, support, and handle tactical decisions to maintain deadlines and manage the in-house design team.
This is a 100% in-office position.
What are the primary responsibilities?
- Lead design efforts, singularly or with a team, to develop fresh and innovative design solutions that support the regional operator’s business objectives.
- Collaborate with and maintain oversight of outside 3rd party architects that may assist us with our design workload.
- Remain current with today’s market and buyer trends and our regional competitors.
- Monitor the progress of all design tasks to ensure on-time delivery and expectations are consistently met.
- Ensure design packages are complete, consistent, thorough, and meet the objectives of the regional operators, while adhering to Toll Brothers’ design standards for excellence.
- Be the inhouse “go-to” person for all things related to design, collaborating as needed with our development teams and regional operators.
- Provide organization and help mentor other project team members.

Does this describe you?

In depth knowledge of single-family residential design inclusive of regional design differences and a variety of styles.

Well versed in current market trends for residential design.

Comfortable leading design charrettes and working in a fast-paced environment, adhering to strict deadlines and budgets.

Extensive knowledge of established architectural and construction practices, procedures and techniques in the U.S.

Strong communicator with clear presentation skills in both studio and leadership settings.

Experienced collaborating with cross-functional teams on a national basis.

Thorough and attentive to details with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.

A sense of humor about the design process (because some days the red pen wins).

Team player with dedication to delivering your best everyday.
Do you have these qualifications?
- Essential:
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture.
- 12+ years of experience designing single-family residential projects across the U.S. with a demonstrated background in regional design differences, materials and constructibility items.
- Robust portfolio of luxury residential design.
- Detailed and organized with solid presentation skills in both studio and leadership settings.
- Experience with supporting a large residential homebuilding operation.
- Strong interpersonal and people management skills including giving (and receiving) feedback.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 software.
- Proficient in AutoCAD coupled with strong hand sketching skills.
- Ability to travel, as needed.
- Preferred:
- Experience with Photoshop, SketchUp, and/or Revit a plus
- Intermediate efficiency in Bluebeam, M-Files, Deltek a plus
The salary for this position is $125,000 – $150,000 plus an annual discretionary bonus and a monthly mobile device allowance.
