About The Role
Our client, a leading national retailer known for its innovative in-house creative and marketing capabilities, is seeking an Art Director – Motion Media to support its communications-focused video strategy. This contract role (20–40 hours per week) will focus on developing high-impact, documentary-style video content that brings authentic, real-people stories to life.
This position plays a critical role in shaping visual storytelling across digital and social platforms. The ideal candidate brings a strong creative vision paired with hands-on production expertise, with the ability to lead projects from concept through final delivery while ensuring alignment with brand and business objectives.
Job Description
The Art Director – Motion Media will lead the creative direction and execution of video content, with a strong emphasis on documentary-style storytelling. This role partners closely with creative leadership, production teams, and stakeholders to produce compelling, high-quality content that resonates with target audiences and supports strategic communications initiatives.
- Develop and execute real-people, documentary-style video content for communications-focused initiatives
- Interview a wide range of individuals, capturing authentic stories that align with business and creative objectives
- Conceptualize and build compelling narratives, including storyboards and visual frameworks that define story arc, tone, and messaging
- Partner with the Associate Creative Director (ACD), Motion Media, to define and maintain creative vision, ensuring consistency in style, tone, and overall quality
- Collaborate with Creative Producers and cross-functional teams throughout all stages of production
- Provide on-set art direction, including interviewing subjects, guiding talent, and directing camera angles, composition, and visual execution
- Shoot short-form video content, including documentary-style footage and sizzle reels, as needed
- Oversee the post-production process, providing direction to editors, colorists, and audio engineers on pacing, cuts, color grading, and sound design
- Ensure all video content meets creative standards and effectively communicates the intended message
- Manage multiple concurrent projects, ensuring deadlines are met and work stays within scope and budget
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in video concepting, art direction, or motion media production
- Strong portfolio demonstrating video direction and content creation (portfolio required)
- Proven ability to create authentic, engaging, documentary-style storytelling content
- Experience interviewing a wide range of subjects and capturing real, human-centered narratives
- Strong understanding of end-to-end video production, including pre-production, on-set direction, and post-production
- Proficiency with video production and editing tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects
- Ability to provide hands-on direction during shoots, including composition, lighting, sound, and talent guidance
- Experience creating content for digital and social platforms, with awareness of current trends and audience expectations
- Strong visual storytelling skills with a refined creative eye for emotionally impactful content
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
- Willingness and ability to travel for on-location shoots as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of sound design principles and audio direction
- Experience with animation and motion graphics
- Experience with color grading or working as a colorist
- Familiarity with retail, brand, or communications-focused storytelling environments
